NASA’s Technology Transfer University (T2U) connects students and faculty with real NASA-developed technologies, inspiring new pathways for innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem‑solving.
In this session, Dr. Mahesh Krishnamurthy, Vin and Caren Prothro Department Chair and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University, will share how NASA technologies can enrich engineering education, strengthen student-led research, and encourage inventive thinking across technical disciplines. Drawing on his extensive work in power electronics, transportation electrification, and technology commercialization, Dr. Krishnamurthy will highlight actionable ways educators can weave NASA innovations into coursework, team projects, and experiential learning opportunities.

Dr. Mahesh Krishnamurthy currently serves as the Vin and Caren Prothro Department Chair and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas, where he is also Co-Executive Director of the Hart Institute for Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He previously served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (2011–2015) and as a Distinguished Speaker (2015–2021). He was a Program Manager (Expert) for the U.S. National Science Foundation from 2021 - 2025, where he managed the EPCN core portfolio in power electronics, batteries, and motor drives.
He holds 26 issued U.S. patents- 25 of which are currently in commercial use in the field of power and energy, with three more pending. He was the founding Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification (2014–2020) and served as Editor-in-Chief from 2020 to 2023. He is the recipient of the IEEE Power Electronics Society’s 2025 Vehicle and Transportation Systems Achievement Award for advancements in rare earth free electric motors in electrified transportation.
